On May 18th 1980, Mt. St. Helens erupted sending ash 80,000 feet from the mountain within 15 minutes. The ash circled the earth in 15 days and released 24 megatons of energy. (from USGS) Above are a few photos from Flickr members who witnessed the eruption.

There were 57 casualties. Among them was local lodge owner Harry R Truman (shown here) who refused to leave his home despite the warning given by scientists that the mountain was going to erupt.
