Defying military warnings, 35,000 Buddhist Monks staged another day of protests in what’s become the biggest anti-government demonstration Myanmar’s seen in nearly two decades. Triggered on Aug. 19 after the government hiked fuel prices in one of Asia’s poorest countries, this most recent string of protests reflects a deep-rooted discontent with a repressive military rule that’s dated back to the early 60’s.

Who loves beer and celebrating October in September? Yes, it’s that time of year again. An international audience flocked to Theresienwiese, Munich, to celebrate Octoberfest, which drew a crowd of more than 6 million visitors last year, including several Flickreenos.

Some members of the team have eschewed the Yahoo! Fuzzbol standard in favour of Ping Pong. I think I’ve found some likely competitors for our first open Flickr Ping Pong Tournament (as yet to be scheduled).

It’s funny how some cloth and careful stitching can craft a seasonally notorious, controversy-cloaked industry. With all of the news surrounding underaged and underfed models, it’s not really surprising some designers do whatever they can to capture attention between the headlines, even so far as covering their models literally from head to toe. Obscene? Circus-y? Beautiful? No wonder they call it a show.

In a previous career life, I wrote speeches for, among other politicians, a former presidential candidate. The job came with its own myriad of accepted behavior (read: chatting in glib, coffee-run fashion, cluttering shared space with pun-inspired posters, and harboring a range of deeply tortured office supplies). And while I’ve since essentially gone cold turkey (the only way to really break free), I can’t help but sometimes look over the shoulder of those who are thickly embedded in the trenches:

If you’ve spent any time in the Forum, you’ll recognize the name Xerxes2K or rather, Kay Kremerskothen. We’re thrilled that Kay has joined Flickr as a Community Manager, specializing in all things German. In fact, if you’re in or around Berlin this weekend, you can meet Kay at the 8th Berlin Fotomarathon (he’ll have Flickr stickers and buttons).
