Virginia, 1949-1961

From thespians to auto-workers, street views to the air, the Adolph B. Rice Studio Collection reminds me somewhat of what we now know as a “photostream.” Apart from the more formal posed work, the collection also reveals glimpses into “normal” life in Richmond, Virginia back in those days. Thank you to The Library of Virginia, which is joining The Commons on Flickr today.

The Library of Virginia is the 11th institution to join The Commons, with many more on the way!

In other Commons news, if you have a spare moment to watch something way better than TV, take some time for a great interview by Robert Scoble with Helena Zinkham, Acting Chief of the Prints & Photographs Division at the Library of Congress, our first Commons member. Helena shares her vast knowledge of photography, its preservation, and what it’s been like for the Library to participate in the Flickr community.
