Michael popped the question in Washington on Inauguration day. (Mazel tov!) The next day, he posted the following query in the Inauguration 2009 group:
“A total longshot, but I wonder if someone on flickr has a picture of my fiance and I, when I proposed to her. It happened right after Lowery finished speaking, on the West slope of the Washington Monument.
If you were taking a picture of the Lincoln Memorial (from the Monument) at the end of the speeches, we might be in it. Post a link to this thread, eh? … Total longshot, I know. Thanks! “
Well, the Flickrverse loves a long shot. It only took a couple of days, but egoody came through:
“I did find you! I can’t see your fiance, though- it looks like you are hugging her. Look in the center of the picture- you’re facing toward the white house, but to the left of the Lincoln Memorial.”
If you were there, you might want to look through your photos and see if you can spot Michael and his fiance too.

In our last edition, Charlie Lumanlan suggested Kit and so, with a quick hop across the Pacific, we find ourselves in Hong Kong.
When the number of someone’s testimonials exceeds our expectation of what a typical member profile looks like, you know you’ve found gold. Here are a few things that Kit’s fans have said:
“*Kit* captures moments in everyday life that could go unseen: those little things become incredible through her eyes.” helena+
“Every photo that she post is a new emotion for my mind. I love how she use her cameras (digital or film) and is able to make good photo in every situation, making something simple in a good looking thing, like a Beethoven sonata.” WasabiNoise
“a generous person, a lovely person, a far too kind person, with a talent for photography seldom seen…” The Norwegian
1. Kit, we know it’s a tough question, but if you had to pick just one camera to shoot with from now until the end of time, what would that be?
Kit: I think this is the toughest among all these 5 questions. :D I use nearly all kind of (film) cameras from Lomo to M6, from Hasselblad to Graflex Crown Graphic and I love them all. I pick a camera depending on the mood of that day so picking one is pretty impossible. However, if I really really have to choose one, it will be my Hasselblad simply because I love the sound of it.
2. Another (possibly) tough question… Tell us your favourite photos on Flickr, and why you like them. First, a favourite from your photostream?
Kit: Actually, I never talk much about my photos because I want them to speak for themselves. So this is pretty rare. :D
Well, photography is a piece of mirror for me. It is a reflection of what I see and what I feel. I had always found it difficult to express myself until I started taking photos in February 2006. So, for me, taking photo is more like keeping a diary than creating an art. (Frankly speaking, I never consider myself artistic.)
I feel that there’s so much connection between me and “The man who sold the World“. He was only a stranger and I didn’t even see his face. Maybe because of that, it was a perfect reflection of my own image at the time I clicked the shutter. What’s more, I always have a frame of picture like that in my mind even before starting photography. Probably because of the dream I always had when I was younger. So it was also like a déjà vu. It is surely not the most popular photo in my photostream but I think it represents me most. :)
And from another Flickr member?
Kit: “the face of another” by memetic. We saw this man at the the same time, we shot him at the same time, but only he nailed it.
3. What’s one tip that you would share with someone who’s just picking up a camera?
Kit: I started taking photos with a Lomo LC-A and the motto of Lomography always has a great impact on my photography, no matter what camera I shoot with. So…
“Don’t think, just shoot!” :)
4. When we interview peeps for employment here at Team Flickr, we always ask: “Kittens, babies, sunsets or flowers? Pick one.”
Kit: Haven’t I told you some people call me Kitty? ;)
5. Which Flickr member should we ask these 5 questions of next?
Kit: There are a lot of amazing works and wonderful people on Flickr. Many of them keep inspiring me everyday. Out of all of them, I think Chris is a photographer and a friend I truely respect. Some people says, “Life is like a movie”. Browsing through Chris’ photos is like peeping into the cinematic moments of some seemingly ordinary life. They provoke my thoughts and touch my deepest emotions. His works are very important to me.
Heather: Kit, thank you. It’s been a pleasure to see one of my favourite cities through your eyes. We’ll be back soon with the next installment of 5 Question when we interview Chris.
Previously, 5 Questions for Kevin Meredith, Steph Goralnick, Olivia Wright, Eric Lafforgue, Maciej Dakowicz, Swiatek Wojtkowiak, Bart Pogoda, Brett Walker, Susan Mac, Minas Papadopoulos, karton kutuda shot zımbırtısı, Fate, Nurul, and Charlie Lumanlan.
With the launch of video on Flickr last year, the Flickrverse had access to a new tool for storytelling. What we’ve personally enjoyed most is having the opportunity to experience events that would otherwise be beyond our reach.
Night dives with Manta Rays? Celebrating Bhutanese New Year in Thimpu, Bhutan? An F-18 launching of the deck of the USS Eisenhower? West Pier Starlings in Brighton? These are but a few of the videos that have rocked our world.
We’ve been working with the fine folks at Stamen on a gorgeous new project to feature the breadth and wealth of video on Flickr that will debut soon.*
While we normally don’t talk about improvements or new features before they launch, we need your help in pre-populating the Flickr Clock. If you’re game, please check out the Flickr Clock group on how you can have your video featured.
*Along with some other video goodies.
We’re commemorating Australia Day by welcoming the State Library of Queensland, Australia to the Flickr Commons.
They join with 8 very diverse sets of photographs dating back to the birth of the State of Queensland in 1859 to the present day. All the photos come from the John Oxley Library, the heritage library within the State Library of Queensland.
These images offer an insight into the many aspects of Queensland history and life, to more grand occasions, such as a photo of Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith on arrival in Brisbane after his record breaking flight, and a picture of Sir Walter Jackson Cooper welcoming Queen Elizabeth II during the royal visit in 1954.
There are also photographs of daily sports and recreation, such as this photo of crocodile hunters in the 1930s.

Since our last main release, we wanted to provide a better uploading experience — more stable, more accepting of different file formats and more capable to handle heftier uploading needs. We’ve worked hard on the new Uploadr version 3.1.3 to process batch uploads and different types of files, including video, better. As always, you can use the Uploadr to sort, edit and organize your images before presenting them on Flickr.
We’ll continue to improve on the Uploadr experience. For now, we hope that Uploadr 3.1.3 will help get your images on to Flickr faster and easier. As always, please feel free to share any issues in this Help Forum topic. Tally-ho.
The 2nd phase of our partnership with Getty Images has launched.
Invitations are being sent out en masse to photographers across the Flickrverse, introducing the tens of thousands of photos that could eventually find a home within the Flickr Collection on Getty Images.
Since the initial announcement of our partnership, we’ve had the opportunity to meet with a number of the Getty Images editors both in Seattle and in London and we’ve heard the same thing — they’re inspired by the quality and creativity of our members.
We won’t have to wait long until we see the end product. The Flickr Collection will debut on Getty Images in March.
In the meantime, if you’d like to learn more about our partnership and have question or comments, please check out Getty Images on Flickr. We’ve also published more FAQs about the who, what, where, when and why.
Many of us stopped what we were doing this morning to watch history being made. Here are a selection of photographs from our Inauguration 2009 group pool. If you’ve captured a moment from your day today, we hope that you’ll consider sharing it with us.
