Today the the Library of Congress debuts the Gottlieb Jazz Photos on the Flickr Commons.

From the Library’s set notes, William P. Gottlieb was a noted music journalist and self-taught photographer, who chronicled the jazz scene in New York and Washington DC during the 1930′s and 1940′s.

Gottlieb sold his collection to the Library, and in accordance with his wishes the photographs in this collection entered into the public domain on February 16, 2010. Please note, additional rights of privacy and publicity may apply.

If you’re in the beta of the new Flickr photo page, a wonderfully addictive way to view these, or any photos, is in the new light box view. Use the arrow keys to page through them, and be dazzled by the Golden Age of Jazz.

See more jazz photos on the Commons.

Behind the scenes at the 2010 Tour de France

DAY 11 - MY SLEEPING PLACE AT COL DE LA MADELEINE

The 97th Tour de France has been wheeling its way thru the smooth (and cobbled) streets of France. Well, mostly France. It wraps up this Sunday in Paris. Ah Paris. As of today Alberto Contador is the frontrunner. Another win for Spain? Be sure to watch, wave, clang a cowbell or, if you don’t want to be that active, look at all the amazing photos.

Flickr iPhone app does multi-tasking and Twitter

Also available in: Español, 繁體中文, Português, Deutsch

Multitasking

In case you missed it in all the hubbub, a new version of the Flickr iPhone app launched last week in the App Store. Flickr for iPhone 1.2 supports the iPhone’s 4 new multi-tasking technology and lets you upload your photos or (HD) videos in the background. It also supports Fast-App-Switching that lets you come back to the app just exactly where you left off. It’s like a bookmark, but better.

Even if your pocket doesn’t hold an iPhone 4, the new version has something for you: You can upload AND tweet a short flic.kr URL simultaneously from the app. All you need to do is link your Twitter & Flickr accounts.

Flickr for iPhone 1.2 comes with a few fancy visual tweaks, a much better browsing experience in full-screen mode and the option to clear your recent searches. It’s now in the App Store – and it’s freeeee.
