Nerd Alert! In Portland, Oregon, public presentations of Star Trek episodes (the original show, folks) are done by a local theater group. This summer, the classic episode Space Seed is being performed. That’s the one where Ricardo Montalbán appears as Khan, one of Captain Kirk’s most formidable foes. Some Flickr members documented the event and it looks like loads of fun!

Hobo Matt, Flickr member since March 2010, is walking (and taking pics) from Rockaway Beach, New York to Rockaway Beach, Oregon. He just left Belt, Montana which means he’s about 1,100 miles from his destination. Wow. It’s been great to follow his progress, from Hutterite colonies to awesome mailboxes to beer cans. If you see him along the way be sure to wave. Read more about why he’s doing this.

We add features and make others better all the time to let you do more with your photos. We thought we’d do a quick round up and reminder about a few of them, and let you know about an update to the Facebook integration.
Connect your Facebook & Flickr accounts
A month ago we launched a new and improved way to share your Flickr photos with your friends and family on Facebook. After you connect your accounts we’ll automatically send an update to your Facebook feed when you upload public photos or videos.
When we first launched we sent updates for every upload but have recently made a change so that we only send an update for each batch of uploads. To manage your settings, first, make sure you’re logged into Flickr and then go to this link. Read the full story here.
Flickr2Twitter
Snap a photo on your phone and share it to your Flickr and Twitter posse at the same time. The subject line of your photo will become your Twitter message. Just like that. You can share your Flickr content either via “upload by email” or tweet images already on the site. Learn more about getting set up here or check out the FAQs.
Geotagging
Geotagging, adding location information to things like a photo, is so very right now. You can geotag your photos using Organizr by dragging and dropping them on to the map where you took them. Some of the fancier phones (you know who you are) submit the data along with the photo, just make sure your settings on your phone are set to upload that. Or, on the photo page just click ‘add to map’ and a new window will open and you can drag and drop your photo right onto the location. Adding geo information to your photos helps add to the story and helps connect you to the people and places around the world.

Recently, long time Flickr member Leo Reynolds posted his 25,000th squared circle to Flickr!
What’s a squared circle? A squircle is a photograph of equal height and width, containing a circle. The circle must fill as much of the frame as possible with its outside edge remaining visible. See more in the squared circle group.

Please join us in welcoming the National Library of Scotland to The Commons! They bring us over 2,000 images, including The Last Letter of Mary Queen of Scots, photographs of tenements on the South Side of Edinburgh taken in 1929 prior to their demolition, the order for the massacre of Glencoe and World War One official photographs from the Library’s Haig Collection, making theirs one of the largest collections in The Commons.
Be it soldiers in the trenches, planes taking to the skies, nurses in the hospitals tending to the wounded or just some camp horseplay, their World War I collection is striking in its comprehension. Dig deeply into these rich archives to see images of Winston Churchill, Queen Mary, the Prince of Wales, King George V and French President Raymond Poincar, among other dignitaries. We hope you’ll annotate these images to bring their stories to life.

The key goals of The Commons on Flickr are to firstly show you hidden treasures in the world’s public photography archives and secondly to show how your input and knowledge can help make these collections even richer. You’re invited to help describe the photographs you discover in The Commons on Flickr, either by adding tags or leaving comments.
