New features: tag relatedness and in-place editing

The end of this week saw the deploy of new code which added some long term stability, squished a bunch of little bugs, added a ton of tweaks and small features and two things which I’m really excited about.

The first is in-place editing for photo titles and descriptions — no more having to go to a separate page or sit through reloads to save changes — you can edit the title and description while looking at the photo in context and then move right along to something else. Check it out on your main photo page or any individual photo page (that link will only work for Flickr members).

The second is tag relatedness, which makes surfing around the tag space that much more fun. It’s the first version of the first part of the first of four planks on which we will build a platform to take over the world. It’s all done algorithmically (no human editing involved) and the results can be eerily good.

For example: the “urban” tag is related to city, street, and graffiti. Here’s more:

It’s pretty easy to get carried away**, so I’ll stop there. But you – go spend some time exploring. It’s pretty amazing to see what emerges when you put together the individual decisions of thousands of people. And more on that some time soon :)
