People I have asked

I’m a bit of a chicken when it comes to asking people I don’t know if I can take their picture. Luckily, ’stpiduko’ doesn’t share my hesitation, as evidenced by his wonderful People I Have Asked set. Makes for a dreamy slideshow too.

A book of your own

My Blurb book arrived!

We’d like to introduce you to Blurb, a self-publishing company that has impressed us with their quality and ease of use. Blurb is our newest service partner, and you can find them on Do More. If you have a hankering to create a book of your own Flickr pictures, you can do so easily through Blurb’s use of the Flickr API. And you can sell your books too.

We had the pleasure of working with Blurb to produce commemorative books for “24 Hours of Flickr” featuring themes and individual photos that illustrate the Flickr community’s global breadth and diversity, and we thank them profusely for their help and support. Their tool for laying out the book was especially useful and intuitive.

“24 Hours of Flickr” is available on Blurb - you can buy a hard copy for $29.95 or soft copy for $21.95. For every book sold, Flickr will donate $1 to Medecins San Frontieres, up to $10,000.

You can see the Blurb books other people have created, and show off your own, in the Blurb group on Flickr.

Yay, Pride!

big day for balloons

San Francisco Gay Pride 2007 did not disappoint. From Friday’s Dyke March to Sunday’s main event, the City by the Bay was awash in a bright rainbow hue. To see more Pride pictures visit the Pride07, LGBT or GayPride groups.

The Pride ‘07 group was started by the Yahoo! Pride team. For every picture added to the pool, Yahoo! will donate $1 (up to $25,000 total) to the Point Foundation, which provides scholarships and services for LGBT youth.

Old Family Photos

Siamese on the wicker chair, 1957

Navajo reservation, Earl Sr. on a housecall.

I was bouncing around technicolor photos today when I stumbled on some lovely old photos from Tinker*Tailor and hapersmion, like this wonderful shot of a pet store opening in Mississippi in 1955. Wandering further, it’s easy to see what a difference it makes when you join a few words together in a tag… Like old family photos, green chair, and to ensure equality in the cat/dog continuum, sleeping dog.

Bienvenue! Welcome! 歡迎! Willkommen! Benvenuto! 반갑습니다! Seja bem-vindo(a)! Bienvenido!

Also available in: Español, Français, Deutsch, Italiano, 한글, 繁體中文, Português

Well, look here! Flickr now speaks seven additional languages: French, German, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish and Traditional Chinese.

This is one of our most requested features and one of our longest standing ambitions, so it is thrilling to see it actually happen. Flickr is a global community of people and their pictures, and we hope to better support our non-English speaking members in their languages, as well as their networks of friends and family in the future.

It’s also been one of the largest development projects in our history, with a lot of co-ordination with new Flickr team members and supporters around the world — to everyone, thank you!

How does it work? Changing your language is as easy as clicking on the language links available at the footer of every page. We’ll remember your selection for your next visit. But it’s still all one global system, database, and community.

In addition to supporting site-wide language preferences, we are also building out language support on Flickr Blog, in the Forum and for Help by Email. We’ve also created a tool for group admins to share localized descriptions of their groups.

Also, if you’ve changed your language preferences, you should grab a new uploader as well (Windows versions are available now, we’re in the final stages of testing for Macs and those will be available soon).

As part of this launch, Flickr Pro payment processing is now handled by Yahoo! Wallet and supports a myriad of credit card options.

Sea Turtles Release

Library - 4749.jpg

The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center on Topsail Island, North Carolina, released thirteen Sea Turtles back into the wild earlier today. I’m not sure if this is Surf City, Kayak, Nelson, Progress II, Cedar III, Nettie, Fisher III, Harley, Buzz, Taylor, Pi, Frosty or Shacklford II, but we wish him (or her) bon voyage.
