Fascinating Occupations

Chef Pulling Sugar

One of the things that is great about Flickr is that it opens up worlds that you could never otherwise see, and one of these is a view of people engaged in occupations I’d never get the chance to see. Here is a list of some of them; please visit these photostreams:

Pastry Life is in school learning to become a pastry chef. He has a blog dedicated to this sweet art, and has photos of cookies, pastries and wedding cakes, much as you’d expect, but also things such as pulling sugar.

The Worship Freehouse is a worship collective based in Saskatoon, Canada, run by Jordon Cooper, who is also a pastor at Lakeland Church. Jordon is steeped in postmodern culture and ideas, and the Freehouse is a collective of artisans and “an incubator for creativity, celebration and core life spirituality.” Their mission is to seek new ways of communicating ancient truths.

Twisted Uterus is a cow doctor who finds herself in some pretty gnarly cow-saving situations. Here she is sewing up incisions after surgery, but if you look around her photostream you’ll see some pictures of cows she is helping out of some very bad states. Eye surgery and, of course, twisted uteruses. Not for those of delicate constitutions!! There’s also a group called Celebrate the Cow for cow-lovers everywhere.

Tod Maffin is a radio reporter who works at the CBC here in Vancouver, Canada. He did a little radio piece about Flickr and tagging a little while ago. He gives us a behind-the-scenes look into the CBC Studios where they handle radio broadcasts, as well as TV and web. He’s also got a photoset of the CBC Studios in Toronto.

Underbunny has been a Flickr member for a long time, and works as an undertaker. She was one of the first posts on the Flickr Blog! Her sensitive and yet unflinching portraits of death and dying have earned her many fans, and have done much to demystify– and make less frightening — the last stages of our time on Earth.

I’m leaving comments open on this post, so if you know of any other great occupations Flickr members are engaged in, please let us know!
