I must confess that I never quite understood Sara‘s original Flickr screen name: awfulsara. Awful? Not so much. Not even a little. Alas her recent exhibition, "One Month in Burma" has closed, but she’s sharing the beauty of Myanmar here on Flickr. We’re thrilled that Sara agreed to join our jury for The Blink of an Eye.
Sara, describe yourself in three words.
Quick to smile.
What one place, person or thing would you run off to photograph if you found the Golden Ticket?
Oy, this sort of thing is impossible to narrow down. Such a delightfully giant, colorful, tender, and poignant world, I can barely sit still. I have so many photographic dream places, I couldn’t even start to choose. The Galapagos Islands seem like a surreal animal overdose. India might give me color convulsions, and there are countless fascinating people at whom I’d love to point my lens.
What’s your "desert island" camera?
Since I’d not be able to see the files or print the negs, I’d have to say forego the camera and pick up the stick in the sand.
What inspires you?
The details. I’m most compelled by the quiet things that don’t scream out to be noticed, but whisper as you walk by or brush your ankle. Genuine moments, real emotion, living things, tenderness.
What’s the photograph that got away?
Can’t say that there are any. I’ve always been good at letting go. Besides, there are so many more to be taken, I shan’t get bogged down with those that slipped by!
Bonus question: Kitten, baby, sunset or flower?
Pfft. Baby. Love em. Wanna squish their cheeks & smell their necks. Oh. Wait. Stick a "my" in front of kitten, and I might have to change my answer. He’s not a kitten anymore, but he is my furry muse. Francesco the Fierce is my practice cat, my test model, and my procrastinating tool, all wrapped in one fuzzy package.
Thanks, Sara.
