The prescription is simple, “Post photos of fences on Fridays.” That’s the only rule of the Fenced Friday group on Flickr. The admin and creator of the group, kmacgray, said he didn’t like the “stringent and exclusive” rules of the other group with the same theme at the time, so he made it dead simple.
“What originally attracted me to fences was my love of shallow depth-of-field — I love my primes,” he said. “I could abstract fences in various ways with my camera. As it turns out, I wasn’t alone. The group grew quickly and attracted scores of fence-loving shooters.”
For kmacgray, the most interesting part of the group is the array of interpretations for what makes a fence. “Sure, there are shots of what everyone recognizes as a fence, but then there are also the handrails, guard rails, stone walls and other items which form a barrier between here and there.”
He admits he does have to block some photos that are clearly out of left field. “The last time I checked, a duck is not a fence,” he said.
Hey kids, guess what day it is? HFF!
