We’re happy to welcome Aalto University in Finland to the Flickr Commons. Established in 2010, the university is named in honor of Alvar Aalto, a prominent Finnish architect, designer and alumnus of the former Helsinki University of Technology, who has also designed a large part of the university’s Otaniemi campus.
Aalto University was created by a merger of the Helsinki School of Economics (established 1904), Helsinki University of Technology (established 1849), and the University of Art and Design Helsinki (established 1871).
Aalto University Library is an academic library open to the public and it holds extensive and diverse electronic and print collections in the disciplines taught at the university. Aalto University Archive collections include documents, image, and artifact materials resulting from the activities of Aalto University’s schools and their predecessors. The library and archive collaborate in caring for and digitizing historic visual collections that document the university’s activities and achievements.
The collections contain documentary photography of the university’s activities, people, and premises, as well as illustrations, architectural and technical drawings, art, design objects, and other materials.
Aalto University Commons aims to increase access to and awareness of their open digital collections and they encourage further engagement with the Flickr community by inviting comments, additional information, and tags about their images.
