Preserving Public Lands: Flickr Joins the Mobilizing for Monuments Campaign

Flickr is home to an extensive collection of photos that capture the beauty of this planet and demonstrate how we are part of a much bigger picture, one in which we must partner and come together in a more powerful way, to protect this planet.  At Flickr, we believe in building a better world through photography and actively seek opportunities to partner with organizations and initiatives that support that mission. Some of those partnerships and initiatives include our recent work towards becoming Climate Neutral Certified and our partnership with The Conservation Alliance.

Joining the Mobilizing for Monuments Coalition

At Flickr, we firmly believe in the power of collaboration to bring about positive change. That’s why we are thrilled to support the Mobilizing for Monuments initiative, an ambitious project committed to preserving our nation’s invaluable natural and cultural heritage for future generations.

One of the projects backed by this coalition is the Keep It Grand AZ project, an Indigenous-led proposal that aims to protect Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni Grand Canyon National Monument. This area is tied to 12 Tribes and Nations who have a shared goal of creating better protections for cleaner air, water, land and endangered species in the region.

Flickr recently signed an open letter to President Joe Biden to protect the Grand Canyon region for future generations through a national monument designation. Tribes and local communities have been advocating for the permanent protection of these iconic public lands in the Grand Canyon Region, and we are adding our voices to that call. At Flickr, we support the designation of the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni Grand Canyon National Monument, as it will protect just over 1 million acres of public lands and waters surrounding Grand Canyon National Park from harmful development.

The good news and the work ahead

We are excited to announce that big protections are coming to the Grand Canyon region as today, President Joe Biden officially confirmed the designation of Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument! So what’s next? The Mobilizing for Monuments coalition is focused on designations for other locations, beyond this recently protected area, and that is where you come in.

As Flickr members, you show your appreciation and reverence for your natural surroundings through stunning photos, uploaded and shared to Flickr every day. We are asking you all to take a moment to read more about the other campaigns hosted by the Mobilizing for Monuments coalition and show your support.

Like the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni Grand Canyon National Monument effort, these other campaigns are all working towards national monument designations with a goal to protect the landscapes that we love and admire. As more actions and petitions are developed for these designation campaigns, we are asking you to follow along with their progress and support each of these efforts. Together we can ensure that these areas are protected and allowed to thrive for generations to come.
