A different life in Afghanistan

Last week in the blog post Life in Afghanistan we highlighted basetrack’s photostream with images from the streets in Afghanistan. His photostream also has a look at the life of some of the soldiers there. Check out the whole photostream when you have a moment. It’s very interesting because of the candid captures into these two different worlds, and also because it’s a great example of how much you can do with a camera phone.

The Kaiping Diaolou caught our eye the other day. Those historic towers, recognized as world heritage by the UNESCO, were fortified buildings that served as protection from bandit forays and as living quarters. See the locations of the different diaolou on the map.

Beer! – From Flickr set to published book

Brown Derby

Lance Wilson and Dan Becker started shooting Dan’s stepdad’s beer can collection on a whim in December 2008. Once uploaded to Flickr…

the photos generated a response greater than we could have anticipated. Within a few months, we had over 180,000 page views, with as many as 20,000 views in one day. That number has since more than doubled, and the set continues to make its way onto various blogs and publications.

Halfway through the shoot of more than 1,400 cans

In the summer of 2009, the flickr set caught the attention of Chronicle Books. They got in touch with us, and we set out to create a coffee table book. We started by re-shooting the cans – more than 1,400 in all – over a grueling three days, and spent the year that followed curating, writing, editing, and designing the book. It hit shelves this past January.

5 Questions for Chihiro

same oldWe assume you have already been wondering when the next 5 Questions inverview will take place… But don’t fret, it’s right here, ready for you to enjoy. This time we are going to Tokyo, Japan to meet with Chihiro (also known as chillhiro in the Flickrverse).

If you’re not familiar with her work, the Flickrverse says the following about her:

"there’s something really special going on here. the images are moving and expressive ..that’s why i stay closely tuned to this photostream." theyardie

"a great photographer with real human sensibility and the eye to see poetry throught life. This stream is a real breath of fresh air. i am a fan! zuper chillhiro!!!"yoann stoeckel

"taleted pretty lady with 2 eyed cameras! amazing!"marikojima

1. Chihiro, we know it’s a tough question, but if you had to pick just one camera to shoot with from now until the end of time, what would that be?

I used to carry a DSLR everywhere since I liked the ridiculous idea of bringing a big DSLR even though i’m quite amateur, and nobody used to do it when i was enjoying that. But it’s kind of style today, similar to carrying middle format film cameras, as many people do, too. So i’ll choose a simple point & shoot, one for just concidering good and easy photo ops.

2. Another (possibly) tough question… Tell us your favourite photos on Flickr, and why you like them. First, a favourite from your photostream?

Because it seems nobody (except me & him) cares about the beauty there even though it was by a busy street next to a big park on Sunday afternoon. This shows what I see for my photographs.

And from another Flickr member?

IMG_9492

Now everyone uses high-end cameras so i dig the originality. His portrait picture has been one and only. Many more pictures of someone that you’ve never seen in his photostream.

3. What’s one tip that you would share with someone who’s just picking up a camera?

What I can tell you is you shouldn’t see pictures that were taken by anyone else, because that was the only one thing that I remember from my photography class in school. I was kinda following the rule till i started posting to fotolog.net. There’s a way to be not influenced by anyone. (And you should not forget that shooting cool architecture/cool dressed-up people on streets in Harajuku doesn’t make your photographs "cool" all the time.)

4. Which Flickr member should we ask the 5 questions of next?

walk dogs

keep eyes open feb,soon

don't look the other way ????

junku-newcleus. i know he was picked up for answering 5 questions from Germany version flickr but i’m sure his photos were known by many more people. and i’m sure he must be be a guy with taste even when he’s not on shooting.

5. Bernie would like to ask you, "I want to hear about the beginning… What led you to start taking photographs?" Please answer this question and also let me know which question about their photography did you always want to ask junku-newcleus?

Room506

There was no special decision at all. Years ago, I just won a film camera capriciously and started using it since I was bored from breaking up. Accidentaly I found fotolog.net and started looking at pictures from several people in the world and decided to spread mine there.

A question for junku-newcleus: It seems you went to Northern area of Japan after the earthquake and took some photos. I want to hear your story about it, what did you feel while you were there?

Kay: Thank you Chihiro! We’ll return with our interview of junku-newcleus soon.

Photos from chillhiro, locaburg, and junku-newcleus.
