With the recent release of our Year in Review, we’re inspired to keep the party going by reflecting on some of the things Flickr accomplished in 2024. We begin 2025 with new goals, but we couldn’t move forward without sharing some of last year’s highlights with you. Join us as we take a look back!
Community Focus
This year has been an incredible journey filled with milestones, community engagement, and memorable moments. We started 2024 with an exciting lineup of activities to celebrate Flickr’s 20th birthday. From themed galleries to photowalks, photo contests, and so much more, the celebrations brought our community together in fun and meaningful ways.
In collaboration with NASA, we launched an open call for our community to capture the April 8th total solar eclipse and share their photos using the #TotalEclipse2024 tag. These breathtaking contributions were later compiled by NASA into a Flickr gallery that truly showcased the talent within our community. We also made our mark at the Photoville Festival in New York City, where we hosted happy hours and a photowalk, creating opportunities for members to connect and share their passion in person.
On World Photography Day, we celebrated with an outdoor-themed photo contest that saw over 12,500 participants and over 30k submissions competing for some great prizes provided by retailer and partner Public Lands.
Throughout the year, we embraced the power of community that makes Flickr special. Whether it was curating Explore Takeovers or highlighting our members’ incredible documentation of 2024’s major astronomical events, we prioritized celebrating the vibrant and diverse communities within Flickr, such as our instant photography and Inktober communities. One of our most recent projects was launching Flickr’s Photo of the Day, an exciting new effort to spotlight one photo each day from our Flickr Social group on Flickr’s Instagram account.
We closed out the year with Your Best Shot and MyFlickrYear, celebrating the best of your contributions!
Partnerships
2024 was an exciting and rewarding year for Flickr, filled with recognition and meaningful initiatives! We were honored to be certified as a Great Place to Work. Adding to this recognition, we were thrilled to be featured on Fortune’s “Best Workplaces in the Bay Area” list for 2024. This is what makes Flickr, well…. Flickr. And together with SmugMug, we know it’s all about the people and their love of photography.
This year marked significant strides in our commitment to sustainable business practices and efforts to protect our planet. We released the Mobilizing for Monument’s Road Trip Film in partnership with The Conservation Alliance, Rivian, and Nuestra Tierra to advocate for the designation of national monuments. This transformative journey, which took place from November 7-13, 2023, allowed us to document the voices and stories of local community members, tribal leaders, conservation non-profits, politicians, and business leaders advocating for the protection of public lands.
We also partnered with The Conservation Alliance to protect Alaska’s D-1 Lands, documenting the lives and stories of the Indigenous communities fighting to preserve their heritage. Further reaffirming our commitment to impactful action and our desire to preserve this amazing resource we love to photograph called Earth, we joined 1% for the Planet, a coalition of businesses who donate 1% of all sales, not just profits, to support verified environmental causes and organizations.
Product Improvements
On the Product experience front, we’ve been hard at work enhancing your experience to make organizing and enjoying your content more seamless than ever. First, we updated Flickr Albums to make organizing your photos more intuitive and enjoyable! From enhanced accessibility to new tools that help you search your albums, reorder your photos, and save your sorting preferences directly from any album page, managing your albums has never been easier.
We also refreshed our website with a sleek, modern, and vibrant new look, creating a fun and funky welcome mat for the Flickr brand and community.
And when it comes to layouts, we also introduced a new option for viewing your Photostream to give you even more flexibility in how you view your content. We’ve also rethought how you interact with groups, making it more mobile-friendly and intuitive. A modernized “Add photo” modal now lets you easily browse and select photos directly from your Photostream, albums, or via the search box. Plus, we made tagging your photos easier with the addition of a handy ‘copy tags’ link to the ‘Add tags’ modal.
For our mobile apps, we made it easier to access information about a photo by introducing a simple swipe-up action in the Lightbox view. We also updated the design, including new icons and information, to help you quickly see more photo details while you’re on the move.
Finally, we renovated our Help Center to serve as a one stop shop for all Support needs: receiving assistance, reporting issues or emerging incidents, sharing feedback, and more.
As we start the new year, we’re grateful for the progress we’ve made and the opportunities ahead to continue building on this momentum. 2025 will be the year of discovery on Flickr, and we can’t wait to have you be part of this journey.
